Emergency Tree Service in Dutchess County: What to Do First
Emergency tree service in Dutchess County for fallen trees, hung limbs and storm damage.
Need emergency tree service in Dutchess County? First, know that not every fallen tree is an emergency. A limb across the back lawn can wait for a normal working day.
What should you do when a tree comes down? First, get everyone away from it, and call 911 if anyone is hurt or a wire is involved. Then report any line to the utility. After that, call us, and Shawn will tell you what can wait and what cannot. The table below shows which call to make first.
| ● Call 911 first | ● Call us now: (518) 960-6057 | ● This can wait |
|---|---|---|
| Anyone hurt, trapped, or unaccounted for | A tree or large limb on the house, garage, car, or fence | Branches down on the lawn, nothing else touched |
| A downed wire on the tree, on the ground, or anywhere near it | A limb hung up in another tree and still airborne | One limb off an otherwise healthy tree |
| Fire, sparking, or the smell of gas | A split trunk, or a lean that was not there yesterday | Leaves and small wood stripped by wind |
| A tree through a wall or roof with people still inside | Roots lifting, with the ground heaved on one side of the tree | Brush piles waiting to be hauled |
| A tree across the only way in or out | The tree you have been meaning to deal with since spring | |
| Anything leaning over where children or animals go |
Injury and fire are the fire department's job first and ours second. We come in after them. For everything in the middle column, call as soon as you see it: (518) 960-6057.
If a wire is involved, stop reading and call 911.
A wire on a tree makes the whole tree live. So can the fence it leans on and the water pooled under it. Do not touch any of it, and keep everyone back, even to take a photo. Call 911, then report it to Central Hudson at 800-527-2714.
We will not touch that tree until the utility makes the line safe. Nor should anyone else. If a company offers to cut it before the utility clears it, that tells you how they work.
Save the number before you need it.

What to do when a tree falls on your house
- Tree on the house. Get everyone out from under that side of the roof and keep them out. Do not climb into the attic to check, because a loaded roof can give way from above. You will not hear it first.
- Limb hung up in another tree. Stay out from under it and keep everyone else out. A hung limb can sit for hours and then drop in a breeze. So rope off the ground beneath it if you have anything to rope it off with.
- Fresh lean, or roots lifting. Treat the whole reach of that tree as unsafe ground, in every direction. Move the cars. Once a tree has started moving, it has already told you what it intends to do.
- Driveway blocked. Park on the road and wait. Cutting your way out in the dark, on a trunk under tension, makes a bad night worse.
- Photograph it before anything moves. Take a wide shot, then a close one, from somewhere safe. Your insurer will want to see the tree where it landed, before it goes into the pile. Those five minutes pay for themselves.
Why so many trees fall in Dutchess County storms
Because we live in a forest with houses in it. Falling trees and limbs cause many of the power outages in Central Hudson's territory. So in 2025 the utility used data to find the trees most likely to fail. It then reported a 24% drop in customer outages for the year (Mid-Hudson News, May 2026). Utilities do not spend that effort on a minor problem.
The other half of it is standing dead wood. The New York State DEC has confirmed the emerald ash borer in all but two counties. Ash makes up almost 8% of the state's trees, and most infested ash die within two to four years. Dead ash goes brittle, so it breaks in wind instead of bending, often high up and often with no warning.
That is why ordinary storms bring down so many trees here. Most of the time, the weather simply finds the tree that was already finished.
What emergency tree service covers
Trees on houses, garages, cars, fences and outbuildings. We also take down limbs hung up overhead and trees leaning into other trees. Split trunks, failed leaders and uprooted trees are part of it too. So are blocked driveways and private roads. We also clear trees on your side of the pole once the utility releases the line. Jude J. described one storm job: "We had a tree down on our shed and tangled into a pretzel in our largest tree". Sandy E. had pear trees split by a storm, one on her outdoor furniture, and wrote: "Shawn’s crew arrived on time, carefully assessed the job, and safely removed the damaged trees without causing any additional damage to my fence or property."
Once the immediate hazard is gone, we look at what is left standing. Storms crack leaders and tear roots in trees that still look fine, so the crew checks those too. If something needs removal or structural pruning before the next storm, you will hear it then, not weeks later.
How fast can an emergency tree service get to you?
You get a real answer on the phone, not a promise printed on a web page. We do not publish a response time, because we have not measured one we can stand behind. A number invented for a website is worth nothing to you in a storm.
Here is how it works instead. After a big storm, many trees come down across the county at once. So there is a queue, and life-safety and structural threats go to the front. Still, reviews show how it often goes. Jude J. wrote that Shawn "fitted us in the next morning before the predicted afternoon storms." Therese M. wrote that "Shawn came out just after the storm and gave me an estimate to take the limb away."
Pricing works the same way as on any other job. Shawn looks at size, position, what the tree rests on and how the crew reaches it. He tells you the price before work starts, and our tree service cost guide covers that in full.
Photos and paperwork for your insurance claim
Photograph the tree where it landed before anyone moves it. Take one wide shot, then close ones of the damage. Adjusters ask for these, and homeowners rarely have them.
We do not negotiate with your insurer and we do not promise a claim outcome. That is between you and them. Instead, we give you the evidence and stay out of the middle.
Emergency tree service questions
What counts as a tree emergency?
Anything in the red or orange columns. The working rule is load and movement. Worry about a tree holding weight it was not built to hold. Also worry about one that has moved and could move again. If you are unsure whether to call, call anyway. Describing it on the phone costs you nothing.
How fast can you get here?
You get a real answer when you call, not a number off a web page. It depends on where you are in Dutchess County and what the roads are like after the storm. During a county-wide storm there is a queue, so we tell you where you are in it. Life-safety and structural threats always go first.
A tree is on the power line to my house. Can you remove it?
Not until the utility makes the line safe, and no tree company should. A wire on a tree can make the whole tree live. So call 911 first, then Central Hudson at 800-527-2714. Once the utility releases the line, we take the tree down.
Does homeowners insurance cover emergency tree removal?
Usually only when the tree has hit something the policy covers. Most policies pay to remove a tree from a house, garage, fence or car. However, many decline the same tree lying in the yard having hit nothing. Read your own policy, and photograph everything before it moves.
Should I cut it myself while I wait?
No. A storm-thrown tree holds tension a standing tree never does, and one saw cut can release it. Penn State Extension counts nearly 128,000 US emergency-room visits for chainsaw injuries from 2018 to 2022. So cut only what is loose on the ground, and leave anything bent, pinned or overhead.
Does an emergency call cost more than a scheduled one?
Shawn prices storm work on the same factors as any job: size, position, what the tree rests on and access. You get the price before the crew starts. <!-- PENDING: any after-hours premium --> Also, if your situation can safely wait for a normal working day, he will tell you that too.
The whole road is out. Do I call you or the utility?
Call the utility, because that outage is theirs, and in Dutchess County that is Central Hudson at 800-527-2714. Call us once the power is back but a tree is still where it should not be. Also call us when a tree came down on your side of the pole. The line from the pole to your house is a different job from the tree across your driveway.
