Tivoli is the northernmost settlement in Dutchess County. It is a village of about 1,000 people in the northwest corner of Red Hook. It incorporated in 1872 from Upper Red Hook Landing and Madalin. The whole village lies inside the Hudson River Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Small village lots, mature street trees and the Hudson immediately to the west define the place. Broadway, County Route 78, runs down to the river, while Route 9G runs along the eastern edge.

As a result, wind off the river is the pressure here. It finds the weak crowns on older village trees every storm season.

Places we work in and around Tivoli

Tivoli Landing

Tivoli Landing is where the village meets the Hudson, at the foot of Broadway. A ferry once crossed from here to Saugerties. Riverside trees here take the full wind off the water, so weak crowns show up first.

Madalin

Madalin was one of the two settlements that joined to form the village in 1872. The other was Upper Red Hook Landing, the village's old name. Both now sit inside the village line, so village rules govern their street trees.

Local rules

Tivoli sits inside Red Hook

Tivoli is a village within the Town of Red Hook, and Red Hook takes its trees seriously. In fact, the Town adopted Chapter 128 in 2008 and runs a Tree Preservation Commission.

Red Hook's Community Forestry Management Plan names ANSI A300, the national standard for how to make a pruning cut. It also names the standards DEC recommends for Region 3.

If your tree is near the road, find out whether it sits in the right-of-way before work starts. That settles whose tree it is, and who gets to decide.

Tree service in Tivoli: common questions

Does Red Hook town law apply to me in Tivoli village?

Partly, because Tivoli is an incorporated village inside the Town of Red Hook. Village rules govern within the village line, while town provisions apply outside it. For a street tree, ask the village before anyone cuts.

Why does Red Hook's forestry plan mention ANSI A300?

Because A300 is the national rulebook for pruning cuts and tree support. So a cut made to it lets the tree seal the wound. In contrast, a careless cut leaves an opening for decay that the tree cannot close.

Wind off the river keeps breaking limbs. What can we do?

Crown cleaning takes out the dead and weakly attached wood that fails first. Reducing end weight on long limbs also lowers the leverage wind can apply. It will not make a tree wind-proof, but it removes what was going to fail anyway.

Is my Tivoli property inside the historic district?

If it is in the village, yes. That is because the entire village sits within the Hudson River Historic District. Ask the village whether any local rule ties to it before removing a street tree.
