Beekman is one of the bigger towns out this way, with about 14,200 people at the 2020 census. It takes its name from Henry Beekman, a 17th-century landowner. Poughquag, along Route 55, is its main business district and home to town hall.

Fishkill Creek drains most of the town, while the southern corner drains toward the Croton watershed. Residential subdivisions sit among hardwood forest, so houses stand among trees that were there long before the foundations went in.

That shapes the job here: oversized native oaks and hickories closer to a roofline than anyone would plant them. Crown work then takes the weight off the house without gutting the tree.

Places we work in and around Beekman

Poughquag

Poughquag runs along Route 55 east of the Beekman hamlet and is the town's main business district. Town hall is here, and the Murphy Grist Mill joined the National Register in 2015. Trees along the busy Route 55 frontage often need traffic planning before removal.

Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake is a hamlet on the western town line, named for the Ice Age lake it sits on. Iron ore mining also once took place along its shores. Lakeside lots put trees between houses and water, where wetland rules can apply.

Clove Valley

Clove Valley is a hamlet in the northeast of the town on Route 216. It was one of the communities in Beekman's mining boom. The Beekman Furnace still stands on Furnace Road, just off Clove Valley Road.

Local rules

Beekman rules, in short

We found no dedicated tree removal ordinance for the Town of Beekman. For a standard residential removal, that means no tree-specific permit.

Wetland, watercourse and steep-slope provisions still apply, and so do conditions attached to a subdivision approval. That matters especially on the newer developments.

If your deed or your HOA carries tree covenants, those bind you even where the town does not. Check before you book, not after.

Tree service in Beekman: common questions

There is a huge oak leaning over my roof in Poughquag. Is leaning a problem?

Not on its own, since many trees grow leaning and stand for decades. What matters is a new lean, soil lifting behind the root plate, or cracks at the base. A lean that changed recently is the one to act on.

Can you take a tree down between two houses?

Yes, since on a tight subdivision lot it comes apart in sections on rigging lines instead of falling whole. It takes longer than an open drop because the crew controls every piece. That control is the reason it is safe at all.

My subdivision approval mentioned trees. Does that restrict me?

It can. That approval protects trees planted or preserved as one of its conditions, separate from any town-wide tree law. Dig out the paperwork before removing anything that looks deliberately placed.

Do you work around Sylvan Lake?

Yes. Sylvan Lake is a hamlet on Beekman's western line, named for the lake it sits on. Lakeside removals need care with wetland rules and with where the wood lands, so we plan the drop zone first.
