Beacon is a city of about 13,800 people between the Hudson and Mount Beacon. The river is its front door, and the mountain is its backdrop. Between them the ground climbs fast, so many yards sit on slope and rock.

The city grew from two villages settled in 1709, Fishkill Landing and Matteawan, which joined as Beacon in 1913. So many older streets are tight, with mature trees standing close to houses. Nobody laid out those lots with a chipper in mind.

Where a bucket truck cannot reach, the tree comes apart from a climbing line instead. Beacon also asks more of the paperwork than most places we work, and one requirement is worth knowing.

Places we work in and around Beacon

Mountainside

Beacon's neighborhoods split into a Riverside and a Mountainside section. Mountainside runs up toward Mount Beacon, where yards climb with the ground. So on those slopes, climbing work often replaces the bucket truck.

Riverside

The Riverside section lies toward the Hudson, around the old Fishkill Landing waterfront. Denning's Point, a peninsula into the river, also sits off this side of the city. These are still city lots, so Chapter 204 applies in full.

What Beacon asks for before a permit is issued

Tree removal in the City of Beacon runs through Chapter 204 of the City Code. The application goes to the Building Inspector, and work may not start until the city issues the permit.

You attach a plot plan or survey showing every tree you plan to remove. Then you mark those trees with ribbon, paint or a sign, so the Inspector can see which ones you propose.

Here is the part worth your attention. The application requires a Certificate of Insurance naming the City of Beacon as holder. It also asks for Workers' Compensation (C-105) and Disability Benefits (DB-120), or a CE-200 from New York State. So a contractor who cannot produce those cannot pull a permit here. Ask any company for that certificate, because in Beacon the city asks anyway.

Tree service in Beacon: common questions

Who issues a tree removal permit in Beacon?

The Building Inspector, at the Building Department in Municipal Plaza. Fill in the application completely, because work cannot start before the permit issues. So plan your timeline around that, not around a same-week start.

Why do I have to mark my trees with ribbon?

So the Inspector can walk the property and see which trees you propose to remove. The application asks for every tree marked with ribbon, paint or a sign. A plot plan or survey showing their locations also goes with it.

Can you climb my tree if a bucket truck cannot reach it?

Yes, because on many Beacon hillside lots, slope, rock and narrow access rule the truck out. The tree then comes apart from a climbing line instead, which takes longer but keeps control.

Does Beacon's permit process apply in Glenham or the Town of Fishkill?

No. Beacon's Chapter 204 covers the City of Beacon only. The Town of Fishkill surrounds the city and has its own Chapter 140, with an 18-inch permit trigger. Check which side of the city line your lot sits on first.
