Wappingers Falls is a village of about 6,100 people, built around the falls on Wappinger Creek. US 9 and Route 9D both run through it. About three quarters of the village lies in the Town of Wappinger, and the rest in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
The old print works shaped the streets. Frame houses, mostly duplexes, line the hillside opposite the mill, because the company built them for its workers. So yards are small, and trees stand against garages, over fences and on the line with next door.
On lots like these, removal is a rigging job more than a felling job. Pieces come down on ropes, in order, into a space the width of a driveway. The village also writes clearance heights into its code. So low limbs over the street are not a matter of opinion.
Places we work in and around Wappingers Falls
Channingville
Channingville is the old name for the village north of Wappinger Creek, which lies in the Town of Poughkeepsie. It grew as a mill settlement around Church Street and West Main, now Route 9D. Buildings stand close together there, so trees have little room to fall.

Franklindale
Franklindale was the name for the east side of the creek before the village formed in 1871. Its old Baptist church stood at Prospect Street and South Avenue. On these village streets, the eight- and thirteen-foot clearance rules apply to every limb over the public way.
Mesier Park
Mesier Park has been a public park since about 1891, with a bandstand and tree-lined paths. It sits inside the Wappingers Falls Historic District, along with downtown and nearby streets. Its trees are public trees, so call the village about them rather than cutting.

Local rules
The village clearance rules, in numbers
The Village of Wappingers Falls property maintenance code sets two heights you can measure yourself. A limb over a public sidewalk has to sit at least eight feet above it. A limb over a public street has to sit at least thirteen feet above it.
The same code requires dead or incurably diseased trees to come down. It also requires removing and destroying the diseased material. Trees must stay pruned of dead wood an inch or more in diameter.
Get a tape on the low limbs before you assume you are fine. A branch that cleared a box truck last summer may not clear one now.

Learn moreTree service in Wappingers Falls: common questions
How low can a branch hang over the sidewalk in Wappingers Falls?
Eight feet is the village minimum over a public sidewalk, and thirteen feet over a public street. Those are code numbers, not guidelines. If your limbs hang lower, crown raising fixes it before anyone complains.
My tree is three feet from the neighbor's fence. Can it still come down safely?
Yes, and on village lots that is the normal job. The crew takes it down in sections on rigging lines instead of felling it whole. It takes longer than an open drop, because control is the point.
Does the village make me remove a dead tree?
Yes. The property maintenance code requires dead or incurably diseased trees to come down, with the diseased wood destroyed. It also requires pruning out dead wood an inch or more across. On a tight lot, a dead tree has nowhere safe to fall anyway.
My address says Wappingers Falls. Am I in the village?
Not necessarily. The Wappingers Falls post office covers parts of Wappinger, Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, East Fishkill and LaGrange. Only homes inside the village line fall under the village clearance rules. Your tax bill shows which municipality you are in.
