Our Process

Clear, careful, and cleaned up when we're done.

1

A look at the stump and your plans

Shawn checks the stump's size, root spread and access. He also asks what the spot is for, because that decides removal or grinding.

2

The 811 call goes in

Before anyone digs, someone calls 811 for the spot. Member utilities then mark their buried lines near the stump.

3

The crew digs out the stump

Our crew cuts around the root ball and lifts the stump out. The crew also cuts back big side roots so nothing large stays under the spot.

4

Fill, level and clean up

We haul the stump away and fill the hole with soil. Finally, the crew rakes the area so it is ready for your next step.

What is stump removal?

Stump removal takes the whole stump out of the ground, root ball included. When it is done, no large wood remains under the spot. That makes it different from grinding, which leaves the deeper roots to rot in place.

Most homeowners never need full removal. However, a few projects cannot sit on top of buried wood. For those jobs, removal is the honest answer.

Stump removal vs stump grinding: which do you need?

Stump grinding chews the stump into chips below grade. It is faster, it disturbs less of the yard and it costs less. So for lawn and garden beds, grinding is usually the better choice.

Removal digs out the stump and its main roots instead. It leaves a bigger hole, takes more time and costs more. Even so, it is the right call when the ground has to carry weight later. Our guide to stump grinding vs stump removal walks through the full comparison.

When should you remove a stump instead of grinding it?

Choose full removal when the exact spot has a job to do. These are the common cases:

  • A new footing or addition. Buried wood rots and leaves voids, so it does not belong under a structure.
  • A driveway or patio. As old roots break down, pavers and asphalt above them can sink.
  • Replanting in the same spot. With the root ball gone, a new tree gets real soil to grow into.
  • Grading or drainage work. Large roots get in the way when you reshape the ground.

If none of these fit, grinding will probably do. Shawn tells you which one your project needs before you pay for either.

How does stump removal work?

First, Shawn walks the spot and looks at the stump’s size, root spread and access. He also checks what sits nearby, such as walls, walkways, beds and sprinkler heads. Then he gives you the estimate himself.

On the dig day, the crew works around the root ball and cuts the big side roots. After that, they lift the stump out and load it for hauling. Finally, they fill the hole and rake the area clean.

Our crew includes Gary, Nate and Ryan, and homeowners often name them in reviews. After a large oak removal, Harry Y. wrote, “The team did a great job taking it down, chopping it up and hauling everything away.” Art C. said, “They left the yard in better condition than when they arrived.”

Call 811 before stump removal in New York

Digging out a stump moves a lot of soil. Gas, power, water and cable lines can run right under a yard. That is why the 811 call comes before any dig.

In New York the 811 service is UDig NY. The location request is free, and member utilities respond within two business days. Professional excavators must call under NYS Code Rule 753.

Keep one limit in mind, though. Utilities mark their own lines, but they do not mark private lines on your property. So tell us about any buried lighting, irrigation or lines to a shed or pool.

What happens to the hole after stump removal?

A removed stump leaves a real hole, often wider than the trunk was. We fill it with soil and level it with the ground around it. Still, fresh fill settles over the following weeks.

Top it up with a little soil once it sinks. Then seed it, lay sod or plant. If you plan a new tree there, see replanting after stump grinding for soil prep that also applies here.

How much does stump removal cost in Dutchess County?

Removal costs more than grinding because it takes more digging and hauling. The main factors are the stump’s width, its root spread and how easy it is to reach. Rock, walls and buried lines close by can add time too.

Shawn prices every job after he sees it, so the quote fits your stump. If the tree is still standing, ask about removal with your tree removal quote. Bundling the work saves a second trip.

Stump Removal: common questions

How much does stump removal cost?

Stump removal usually costs more than grinding because it takes more digging, time and hauling. The price depends on the stump's width, root spread, access and what sits nearby. Shawn gives you a clear price after he sees the stump. Our stump grinding vs stump removal guide explains how the two compare.

Do I need stump removal or is grinding enough?

Grinding is enough for lawn, garden beds and most yards. Full removal makes sense when you will build, pave or set a patio on that exact spot. It also helps if you want a new tree in the same hole. If you are unsure, see our stump grinding page for the lighter option.

Do I need to call 811 before stump removal?

Yes, because digging out a stump disturbs the soil where buried lines can run. In New York the 811 service is UDig NY, and the location request is free. Member utilities mark their own lines, but they do not mark private lines on your property. Allow time for the marks before the dig day.

Can I plant a new tree where a stump was removed?

Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to remove a stump. With the root ball out and the hole filled with soil, a new tree has room to root. Give the fill time to settle first. Our guide to replanting after stump grinding covers how to prepare the soil.

Will stump removal tear up my lawn?

Removal disturbs more ground than grinding, so expect a patch of bare soil around the hole. The crew fills and levels the spot, then rakes up the debris. Most yards look normal again once you seed the patch. Tell Shawn about beds, walls or sprinkler heads you want protected.

Can you remove an old stump from a tree someone else cut down?

Yes. An old stump comes out the same way as a fresh one, although rot can change how the roots hold. Shawn looks at it first and tells you whether removal or grinding makes more sense. Then you get a price before any work starts.
